Facebook is one of the most widely used social media platforms for personal use and business applications. People will go on Facebook to view friend’s faces, their antics and enjoy themselves, by sharing engaging videos, images and stories.
Many years ago, Facebook advertising, was likened to television advertising. It often doesn’t generate an immediate response however it imprints on users, making your brand more recognizable. More and more businesses are seeing the benefit of Facebook – by creating a business Page or creating groups, dedicated to their business.
Facebook Pages, can invite people to “Like” them which thereby obtains the user’s consent to have their updates post in the News feed of the user. However, due to the volume of friends and likes, some business owners find it challenging to ensure that their information is seen in the news feed without being lost in the deluge of information. Enter Facebook Advertising, or savvy business owners who create promotions, and benefits that reward users to use their services.
Groups are UNIQUE – because updates posted within the group are immediately populated into ALL Members UPDATE FEEDS. Imagine if you could now get their immediate attention whenever you WANTED? What an OPPORTUNITY for ABUSE if you don’t know the basic rules of ethics, etiquette or just plain common sense.
Well here is the story of one Facebook Business –
who decided to annoy the
WRONG FACEBOOK USER.
NAMELY
ME.
A few days ago, I was working away on a website that my team is building for a client, when I get a Facebook notification that I was “ADDED” to a private Group. This private group is called Black Tie VIP . I was curious as to who invited me to a group that was private, making me an automatic member of the group. I clicked to look – and saw that it was a business located in Bolton, who sold trinkets. I actually looked at the posts, and saw nothing of value to me, as I live in Guelph and am just not willing to drive 1 hour to Bolton to buy something that I could pick up locally. I noticed that a lot of people that I knew (Who all know a lot of people) were also in this group.
I left the group and proceeded to go back to work. It disturbed me though, that I didn’t recognize the store, have never shopped there, and don’t know the owner. I wondered what in the hell, possessed this business owner to just randomly add me and others to their Private Group? I reached out to another “member” of the group, who happens to be a close friend, and asked if THEY knew who this person or place was. They were also bewildered, as THEY TOO had just been added to the group, and kind of knew who the person was… but had not expressed ANY interest in the business and had never shopped there. While on the phone with her, I saw another Facebook notification, that told me…
I HAD BEEN ADDED BACK INTO THE GROUP…
I KNOW RIGHT??
NOW… they had my interest….
Here was an opportunity to get real live examples of complete and utter Facebook ignorance…
YAY ME!
I LEFT AGAIN.. and began crafting a FACEBOOK POST
In the time that I posted THIS
GUESS what HAPPENED??
YOU GUESSED IT..
THE IDIOT ADDED ME FOR THE THIRD TIME…
NOW…
THIS TIME I was given a NEW option when trying to leave the group…
MARK AS SPAM
I hovered my finger over the SPAM REPORT… and thought hmm.. this is harsh right? Should I really think about this? I am WAITING for them to grow some ethics, or just operate with respect….
I then marked as Spam – and am now contacting my friends in the group – (Another one this morning) who all seem to find themselves invited into the group – after never having been in the store before or was asked to help promote this business owner.
